Small town or big city? Where would you like to live? And where do you actually live? Metropolises are predominantly the focus of political and social interest. Young people in particular are drawn to big cities because of the good training and working conditions or the diverse cultural offerings.

"In Germany alone, almost 25 million people live in small towns - almost as many as in the 80 major German cities" says the Director of the Federal Institute for Research on Building, Urban Affairs and Spatial Development (BBSR), Dr Markus Eltges. "The geographical location of small towns, central or peripheral, explains differences in local locational and living conditions. Regardless of their location, small towns contribute significantly to equal living conditions - as places to live, but also as economic centres in the regions. Many secret world market leaders have their headquarters in small towns. The municipalities have to catch up especially in the provision of fast internet. Here, there is still a big gap to the supply in the big cities."

The question of whether it is better to live in a big city or a small town in Germany depends very much on individual preferences, needs and living circumstances. Both options have their advantages and disadvantages and the decision often depends on which aspects of life are more important to you personally.

Big cities score with good job opportunities, a good infrastructure and a wide range of cultural offerings. On the other hand, there are high rents and living costs, more noise and traffic and greater anonymity than in small towns.

Small towns often offer a more relaxed environment with access to nature and green spaces. You often know your neighbours and feel more part of a close-knit community. The cost of living is usually lower than in big cities, which allows for greater financial freedom. However, small towns offer less diversity compared to big cities, both in terms of population and services and shopping opportunities.

Anyone planning a move should carefully weigh up the advantages and disadvantages between a small town and a big city and tailor them to their personal preferences.
