The question of who lives more contentedly cannot be answered unequivocally in every case. Life satisfaction depends on many individual factors and cannot be reduced to the housing situation alone. But some factors are decisive.

Property owners can develop greater stability and security in terms of where they live. They have the freedom to design and adapt their property according to their preferences. They also potentially have the opportunity to benefit from rising property values.

On the other hand, homeowners also bear the financial responsibility for their property. They have to take care of maintenance, repairs and possibly mortgage payments. Tenants are usually more flexible in terms of mobility. They can change their place of residence more easily and are not tied to a specific property.

However, tenants often have less control over their housing situation and may have restrictions regarding pets, renovations or decorations. They may also face the uncertainty of rent increases or terminations, depending on the terms of the lease and the housing market.

The majority of Germans over 18 feel burdened in their current housing situation. Those who own their own home are more likely to live contentedly. This is particularly true for women. This is shown in a representative survey by ImmoScout24.

Only a minority of 38 percent of Germans are satisfied with their current housing situation. Germans are most bothered by the high ancillary costs (22 per cent). In second place are the high rents (15 per cent), and almost as often the lack of space is a problem (14 per cent).

While only 37 percent of tenants are satisfied with their housing situation, the share of property owners is significantly higher at 43 percent. Among women who live in their own homes, the number of satisfied people even rises to almost half (49 percent). Among men who own their own home, the rate is significantly lower - only 38 percent live contentedly.
