Winter offers many opportunities for sports and leisure activities, but it also brings challenges. Hazards arise, for example, when the power fails or metres of snow need to be cleared. Here are a few tips to help you avoid damage caused by the cold.
In view of the power outage in Berlin and the cold spell in Germany, the VDI warns of damage caused by frozen heating and drinking water pipes. Not only technical installations are at risk, but above all houses and flats belonging to private individuals. If water remains in the pipes and freezes, for example due to a power outage or the prolonged absence of the residents, it expands and can cause the pipes to burst. This initially goes unnoticed, as no water leaks out while the frost persists. However, when the pipes thaw, serious water damage can occur.
If a house is not heated during a period of frost and no drinking water is being used, inform your property insurer immediately and follow the procedure specified by them. It is also advisable to shut off the drinking water supply. Although this will not prevent the pipes from bursting, it will limit the amount of water that escapes. If possible, the pipes should be drained. Drinking water installations should be shut down and restarted by a professional. If you suspect that pipes have frozen, you should close the main shut-off valve and open the taps so that the excess pressure in the pipes can be released in a controlled manner.
Although it creates a winter atmosphere when pavements and driveways disappear under a thick white blanket, it also increases the risk of accidents. The TÜV Association provides tips on how to clear snow around the house safely and without overexerting yourself. Clearing snow can be hard work that puts strain on your back, shoulders and cardiovascular system. If you are not careful, you risk injury in the worst case. The work becomes safer and easier if you use the right equipment. The right clothing also plays an important role in ensuring that winter maintenance is carried out safely. In addition to a warm jacket, other accessories should also be part of your equipment. Shoes with a grippy tread provide traction on slippery surfaces and significantly reduce the risk of slipping. Gloves not only protect against the cold, but also ensure a secure grip.
