Who wants to belong to the group of cookie-cutter people? Every person is unique. On the other hand, averages help us assess our own position.

The Federal Statistical Office has launched a new special page on the "average person": www.destatis.de/durchschnittsmensch. The data covers many different areas of life.

Assuming that one person represents all 83.6 million people living in Germany, the average person would be 44.9 years old (as of the end of 2024). The average woman would be 46.2 years old, a good two and a half years older than the average man (43.5 years). The higher average age of women is related to their higher life expectancy.

According to the 2024 microcensus, the average person's family has 3.4 members. Families here include all parent-child constellations living in one household. Looking at all household types, from single-person households to large families, the average person lives with one other person. The average home has a living space of 94.4 square meters and costs €7.28 net rent per square meter.

Full-time employees earned an average gross monthly income of €4,634. Women working full-time earned significantly less than men, with a gross monthly income of €4,214 compared to €4,830.

A new IW study shows that the median wealth of all German households in 2023 was €103,100. This means that half of households had more wealth and half had less. The ten percent of households with the highest wealth owned more than €777,200. How much wealth someone has depends heavily on their age. The median was highest in the 55 to 64 age group, at €241,100. One of the main reasons for this is that it takes a long time to build up wealth – often an entire working life. Home ownership plays a major role in this.
