Hydraulic balancing ensures that the heating system works efficiently and economically. The heating and thermostats are set so that each radiator receives exactly the right amount of hot water.

According to the non-profit consultancy co2online, hydronic balancing costs around 925 euros for an average single-family home. For apartment buildings, the costs depend on the size of the building and the number of residential units. For an apartment building with 500 square meters of living space, the costs are around 5,000 euros.

Anyone who has made major structural changes to a building should have a calibration carried out after the work has been completed. The result will last a long time if no further changes are made. Anyone wishing to claim subsidies must submit the result of the hydronic balancing, depending on the measure. The amended Building Energy Act (GEG) stipulates that owners of apartment buildings with at least six residential units must have their building's heating system checked and optimized and have hydronic balancing carried out.

Billing systems for apartment buildings such as Ista, Brunata-Metrona or Techem already offer special procedures for hydraulic balancing of the heating system. Brunata-Metrona's intelligent heating control system has now been certified by TÜV Rheinland.

The certified procedure is based on an infrastructure that is already installed in apartment buildings as part of submetering. This makes it significantly cheaper, simpler and more efficient than conventional methods. The process can lead to energy savings of up to 30 percent. This is a particularly important argument for buildings with gas heating systems. After all, over 1.2 million new gas heating systems have been installed in the last two years alone. However, the framework conditions for heating with gas are deteriorating rapidly: rising CO2 prices, higher network charges and legal restrictions will make heating with gas significantly more expensive in the coming years.
