The new year will be exciting. New governments are taking office in the USA and Germany. And as with every new year, new laws, regulations and rules will come into force at the start of 2025. Here you will find the most important changes for tenants and property owners.

Property tax will be levied according to new rules from 1 January 2025. Property tax will be calculated according to the federal model, while some federal states have developed their own calculation criteria. The value of the property is decisive for the calculation.

Stricter requirements will apply to the operation of wood-burning stoves from 2025. Many wood-burning stoves already fulfil the stricter requirements as there were long transitional periods. This affects fireplaces, stoves and wood-burning stoves that were put into operation before 21 March 2010.

Most taxpayers will pay less tax in 2025 but more than in 2024: the federal government has agreed to equalise the cold progression and increase child benefit. The citizen's allowance remains unchanged. The statutory minimum wage will rise to 12.82 euros gross per hour. The monthly earnings limit for mini-jobs will rise to 556 euros. Housing benefit will increase by an average of 15 per cent

The electronic patient file (ePA) will be introduced for all people with statutory health insurance at the beginning of 2025.

New rules apply throughout the EU for used clothing. Old textiles, bed linen, towels and other textiles must be disposed of in used clothing containers.

The CO2 price will rise from 45 to 55 euros per tonne from January 2025. This will affect the prices of petrol, diesel, natural gas and heating oil.

From January, the Deutschlandticket will cost €58 per month instead of the previous €49. It will continue to be valid nationwide on all local public transport.

The USB-C charging standard will be mandatory for smartphones, tablets and other devices from 2025. The standardised charging cable will not apply to laptops until 2026.
