In May of this year, the Federal Statistical Office collected the current data for the Census 2022. It determines how many people live in Germany and how they live and work. Many decisions at federal, state and municipal level are based on population and housing figures.

Within the framework of the building and housing census, all private owners of flats or buildings with living space were surveyed, as well as commercially active multiple owners and managers. The building and housing census collects current data on housing and the housing situation throughout Germany. The results provide an overview of the structure of the buildings according to year of construction, type of heating and energy source of the heating system. Furthermore, the data on housing vacancy rates are an important basis for sensible housing policy measures.

The Census 2022 provides the data basis on the topic of energy in residential buildings. For the first time since 2011, there will be up-to-date, area-wide figures on housing. "Where do we need more family-friendly housing, where more age-appropriate housing? Only if we have reliable data on this can we plan and decide according to demand," says Dr Georg Thiel, President of the Federal Statistical Office.

The census makes it possible to show important factors of the energy condition of buildings and dwellings. The energy sources are differentiated according to gas, oil, pellets, biomass, solar, electricity and coal. This makes the census results an important data basis for decisions within the framework of climate and energy policy in Germany.

By recording net rents, a comprehensive overview of the level of existing rents becomes possible. In this way, the new data of the 2022 Census meet the increasing demand for comparable information on rents nationwide. Against the backdrop of the current housing shortage, the results of the building and housing census play another important role: the results on vacancies show for the first time in detail what the reasons are for longer vacancies in particular. The anonymised data do not allow any conclusions to be drawn about individual flats or buildings.
