The past spring storms have clearly shown it again - nature is not controllable. This makes it all the more important to take the right precautions and to provide financial protection for possible damage.

Homeowners insurance is an important form of protection for homeowners. It compensates for damage caused by storms and hail, if storms are also insured. However, the insurance only pays for roofs that have been torn off, chimneys that have snapped off, or damage to the house caused by fallen trees if a storm has reached at least wind force eight. The additional protection provided by natural hazards insurance against so-called natural hazards such as floods, landslides, avalanches or earthquakes is becoming increasingly important. Weather experts expect severe storms to increase.

Which insurance policies are also important depends on the individual life situation. In Germany, households spend an average of 1,500 euros a year, or around 125 euros a month, on insurance policies. This does not include contributions to life and pension insurance or private nursing care and health insurance. Stiftung Warentest has analyzed reasons why it makes sense to regularly review one's own insurance policies.

New life situation: Whenever significant changes occur in life, it is time to check whether the insurance policies you have taken out are still sufficient, for example when you get your first job, when a child is born, when you buy a house or when you start your pension.

Save money with better benefits: New policies often offer better benefits. For example, today's personal liability policies often offer much greater coverage and are sometimes less expensive at the same time.

Rule of thumb: Each and every person should imagine the greatest possible damage that an insurance policy would cover. If this damage could not be financed out of one's own pocket, insurance makes sense.
